Beach Umbrella vs. Cabana on Fort Lauderdale Sand
Both keep you out of the sun; they fail and succeed in different conditions. The choice usually comes down to group size, how long you are staying, and the day's wind forecast.
Coverage and group size
- A 7.5-foot wind-vented umbrella shades two loungers comfortably, three at a squeeze as the sun moves.
- A four-post cabana or 10x10 canopy shades four to six people plus a cooler and bags all day.
- Umbrellas need repositioning through the afternoon; a canopy does not.
Wind behaviour
A vented umbrella on a sand auger handles the routine sea breeze well and can be struck in under a minute if a squall line arrives. A tensioned canopy is steadier in sustained wind but takes longer to bring down, so it is the option we decline first when the forecast turns. On high-wind days we will install umbrellas rather than a canopy that cannot be anchored safely.
Sun protection quality
UPF 50+ cabana fabric with side panels blocks reflected light off the sand and water, which ordinary umbrella canopies do not. For infants, fair skin, or anyone on photosensitising medication, the difference across a full day is meaningful.
Cost factors
Cabanas cost more than umbrellas because they carry more fabric, more anchoring hardware and a longer install and strike. Pricing varies with the number of posts, panel configuration, block length and the access point, so it is quoted per booking rather than posted as a flat figure.
Which to choose
Two to three people for a half day: umbrella. Four or more, a full day, small children, or a group that wants a base to return to: cabana. Turtle nesting season affects neither choice as long as everything is sited outside marked nest buffers and struck before dusk.

Can we start with an umbrella and add a cabana later?
If the crew is still on that stretch, sometimes. It is far easier to book the cabana up front, since anchoring hardware is loaded per route.
Are cabanas allowed on public Fort Lauderdale sand?
Shade structures are set up on the public beach daily. They must stay clear of marked sea turtle nests, must not block access or lifeguard sightlines, and must be removed at the end of the day.
